Paadal Petra Sthalam (#12 in Nadu Naadu / 276 Shaivite Shrines); Glorified in Tevaram by Thirugnanasambandar. Historic site of **Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi's Vision of Light (1896)**.

Arakandanallur Arulmigu Athulyanadheswarar Temple (historically known as Thiru Araiyani Nallur) is an extraordinary hilltop rock-cut sanctuary and the 12th holy Paadal Petra Sthalam in the historic Nadu Naadu region of Tamil Nadu. Perched majestically atop a massive granite rock hill overlooking the South Pennai River near Thirukoilur, this ancient temple is famous across Indian spiritual history as the site where the Pandavas resided during exile and where Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi experienced a divine pillar of light in 1896 guiding him to Arunachala.

Enshrined in the 7th-century Tamil Tevaram hymns composed by child-saint Thirugnanasambandar, the temple derives its name Athulyanadheswarar (Incomparable Lord / Oppilaanathar) from Lord Shiva's peerless brilliance. The hilltop complex features a ancient Rajagopuram, an inner sanctum housing the Swayambhu Lingam atop the natural rock ridge, a dedicated shrine for Goddess Azhagiyaponnamman, five rock-cut Pandava caves (Pandava Guhai), and panoramic views of Mount Arunachala visible in the northern horizon.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

The Pandava Exile & Rock-Cut Caves

According to the Sthala Puranam, during their twelve-year forest exile (Agnatavasa), the five Pandava brothers (Yudhisthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva) and Draupadi stayed atop the granite hill of Arakandanallur. Arjuna carved rock shelters into the granite hill face to create living quarters. Draupadi daily collected sacred lotus flowers from the hill rock tank and offered worship to Lord Athulyanadheswarar. The five rock-cut caves (Pandava Guhai) remain preserved on the temple hill.

Sambandar's Vision of the Mountain of Fire

When child-saint Thirugnanasambandar journeyed towards Arakandanallur, he beheld the entire granite hill glowing as a fiery mountain of divine light. Out of deep reverence for the sacred soil, Sambandar refused to step on the hill with his feet and sang his Tevaram hymn "Paaruruvil aiyana... " from the plain below. Gratified by the child's humility, Lord Shiva manifested on a lower rock ledge so Sambandar could offer worship without treading on the main hill!

Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi's Vision of Light (1896)

On September 1, 1896, 16-year-old Venkataraman (who would later become Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi) arrived at Arakandanallur temple during his solitary journey from Madurai to Tiruvannamalai. As he sat meditating inside the Athulyanadheswarar sanctum, a blinding, luminous column of divine light filled the inner shrine. The young sage followed the direction of the light, which pointed directly towards the peak of Mount Arunachala in the distance, confirming his divine destiny.
