Paadal Petra Sthalam (#1 in Kongu Naadu / 276 Shaivite Shrines); Glorified in Tevaram by Thirugnanasambandar. Celebrated as the **Dakshina Triveni Sangam** (Kooduthurai).

Bhavani Arulmigu Sangameshwarar Temple (historically known as Thiru Nana / Kooduthurai) is an ancient and world-famous Paadal Petra Sthalam in the Kongu Naadu region of Tamil Nadu. Perched dramatically at the holy confluence (Kooduthurai) where the sacred Cauvery River, Bhavani River, and the invisible subterranean Amudha River unite, Bhavani is celebrated across India as the Triveni Sangam of South India.

Enshrined in the 7th-century Tamil Tevaram hymns composed by child-saint Thirugnanasambandar, the temple is unique for housing both Lord Shiva (Sangameshwarar) and Lord Vishnu (Aadhikesava Perumal) within the same temple sanctuary, symbolizing Hari-Hara unity. The 10-acre temple complex features a grand 5-tiered Rajagopuram, an inner sanctum housing the Swayambhu Lingam of Sangameshwarar, a dedicated shrine for Goddess Vedanayaki, the ancient Ilanthai tree (Sthala Vriksham), and the historic Collector William Garrow Ivory Cradle. Millions of pilgrims visit Bhavani to perform holy river immersion (Sangam Snanam) and ancestral rituals (Pithru Tarpanam).

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

The Holy Confluence (Kooduthurai / Dakshina Triveni Sangam)

According to the Sthala Puranam, four celestial sages (Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanatkumara, and Sanatsujata) traveled across South India seeking a spot where the divine energy of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu converged. When they arrived at Bhavani, they witnessed the majestic union of the Cauvery and Bhavani rivers, joined by the underground stream Amudha (Saraswati).

Lord Shiva manifested from a self-born Lingam at the river junction as Sangameshwarar (The Lord of Confluence), while Lord Vishnu manifested as Aadhikesava Perumal with Sridevi and Bhoodevi. Puranic scriptures declare that bathing at Kooduthurai during New Moon days (Amavasai), Solar/Lunar eclipses, and Aadi Perukku washes away ancestral karmas (Pithru Doshams) with merit equal to Ganga Snanam at Prayagraj.

Collector William Garrow's Ivory Cradle Miracle (1804)

In 1804, during British rule, William Garrow served as the Collector of Coimbatore and Erode districts. Residing in a bungalow near the Bhavani temple, Garrow respected local traditions and daily viewed Goddess Vedanayaki's shrine through a special window in the temple wall.

One night, during a sudden violent monsoon storm, a young girl wearing gold ornaments entered Garrow's bedroom, tapped his shoulder, and gestured for him to follow her outside. Just seconds after Garrow stepped into the garden, lightning struck his residence, causing the entire roof to collapse! Looking around, Garrow realized the girl had vanished into thin air. Overwhelmed by gratitude to Goddess Vedanayaki for saving his life, Collector Garrow commissioned a master craftsman to carve an exquisite ivory cradle (Yaanai Thandha Thottil) engraved with his personal signature, which he presented to Goddess Vedanayaki. The historical ivory cradle remains preserved and displayed in the Goddess shrine to this day.
