Arulmigu Ekambareswarar Temple is the largest and most ancient temple complex in the temple city of Kanchipuram, covering an expansive 25 acres. Revered as the Earth Element (Prithvi Sthalam) among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams and Shrine #1 of Tondaimandalam in the Paadal Petra Sthalam canon, the temple is crowned by a colossal 59-meter (192 feet) tall 11-tiered South Rajagopuram built by Emperor Krishnadevaraya in 1536 CE.
The inner complex features a majestic 1,000-pillared hall (Aayiram Kaal Mandapam), five spacious concentric precincts (Prakarams), and a 3,500-year-old sacred mango tree (Sthala Vriksham). Because the primary icon is a self-manifested Lingam made of sacred river sand (Prithvi Lingam), no liquid Abhishekam is performed directly on the primary Lingam; instead, aromatic oils and paste (Punugu) are applied to its base.
