- Spiritual & Architectural Overview: Located on the western bank of the sacred Ganges river in Varanasi—the world's oldest continuously inhabited spiritual city—Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the spiritual beating heart of Hinduism. It is believed that Kashi rests on the tip of Lord Shiva's divine trident (Trishula), exempt from cosmic destruction (Pralaya). Rebuilt in 1780 CE by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, the inner shrine features twin 15.5-meter tall spires plated with 800 kilograms of pure gold leaf. In December 2021, the 5-acre Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor was inaugurated, directly connecting the temple complex to Manikarnika, Jalasen, and Lalita Ghats on the Ganges.
- Sacred Geography & Setting: Situated at the heart of old Kashi along the crescent curve of the River Ganges between Varuna and Assi rivers.
- Core Spiritual Identity: The supreme abode of liberation (Kasayam Maranam Muktih), where Lord Shiva whispers the Tarak Mantra into the ear of departing souls, granting instant freedom from the cycle of rebirth.

About the Sacred Destination
Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends
According to the Siva Purana (Koti Rudra Samhita Ch. 22–23) and the Kashi Khanda of Skanda Purana, at the beginning of creation, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu entered into a cosmic debate over supreme lordship. Suddenly, a colossal, limitless pillar of light (Jyotirlinga) pierced through the three worlds.
Lord Brahma flew upwards as a swan to find the top of the light pillar, while Lord Vishnu descended as a boar to find its base. After thousands of years, Vishnu returned and humbly admitted he could not find the base. Brahma falsely claimed he had found the top, citing the Ketaki flower as false witness. Lord Shiva manifested from the column of light, severed Brahma's fifth head for lying, and declared that this light column would forever anchor itself at Kashi as Vishweshwara (Vishwanath).
Legend holds that during an ancient drought, Lord Shiva dug a sacred well with his trident called Gyan Vapi (Well of Knowledge) to cool the Lingam. When Aurangzeb ordered the destruction of the temple structure in 1669 CE, the chief priest grabbed the sacred Jyotirlinga and leaped into the Gyan Vapi well to protect it from desecration. Furthermore, Goddess Parvati assumed the form of Goddess Annapurna in Kashi, where Lord Shiva himself stood with a begging bowl (Bhiksha) to receive food, declaring that no one in Kashi shall ever go hungry.
The traditional Shivaratri procession (Shiv Baraat) in Kashi features thousands of sanyasis, aghoris, musicians, and pilgrims dancing through the ancient narrow alleys (Galis) of Varanasi in ecstatic celebration.
