Divine Birth of Goddess Meenakshi & Digvijayam Narrative
The sacred chronicle of Madurai revolves around the divine birth of Goddess Meenakshi as Princess Tadatakai. King Malayadwaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamalai of the ancient Pandya dynasty, grieving their childlessness, conducted the solemn Putrakameshti Yajna. Out of the blazing sacrificial altar emerged a three-year-old girl child possessing three breasts (mupthanai). While the King was perplexed, a divine heavenly voice (Asariri) reassured him to name the princess Tadatakai, crown her as the royal heir to the Pandya throne, and raise her in statecraft and warfare. The divine voice revealed that her third breast would miraculously dissolve the instant she encountered her destined divine consort on the battlefield.
Ascending the throne, Princess Tadatakai excelled in all 64 traditional arts and martial sciences. She launched a grand military expedition of global conquest (Digvijayam), subduing terrestrial kingdoms, celestial guardians (Ashtadikpalakas), and devas. Pushing her campaign up to the icy peaks of Mount Kailash, she confronted Lord Shiva's divine army. When Lord Shiva Himself stepped onto the battlefield, Tadatakai looked upon His radiant countenance, her heart swelled with celestial love, her martial stance transformed into bashful grace, and her third breast instantly vanished.
Divine Celestial Wedding (Thirukalyanam) & The Velli Sabha Miracle
Lord Shiva instructed Tadatakai to return to Madurai, promising to marry her in her capital. On the appointed day, the divine cosmic wedding (Thirukalyanam) was celebrated in Madurai with unprecedented splendor. Lord Vishnu, acting as her divine brother Kallazhagar, performed the solemn Kannikadhanam (gifting of the bride) by pouring holy water into Lord Sundareswarar's hands.
Following the wedding ceremony, a grand banquet was arranged for all sages, devas, and devotees. However, two great sages—Patanjali (the serpent sage) and Vyaghrapada (the tiger-footed sage)—refused to consume any food until they witnessed Lord Shiva's divine cosmic dance in Madurai. To honor their supreme devotion, Lord Sundareswarar manifested His mesmerizing Sandhya Tandava before the assembly.
During the dance, King Rajashekara Pandya, a deeply devout monarch who had mastered 63 arts and was learning dance, noticed that in the famous Chidambaram Nataraja posture, the Lord permanently stood on His right leg while raising His left leg. Reflecting on the intense physical strain this must cause the Lord, King Rajashekara wept and prayed fervently: "O Lord! If You do not switch Your leg and stand on Your right leg to ease Your fatigue, I shall end my life with this sword!" Touched by the king's selfless empathy, Lord Sundareswarar performed a miraculous posture switch, lifting His right leg and standing gracefully on His left leg on a silver stage—establishing the Velli Sabha (Silver Hall) of Madurai.
