Paadal Petra Sthalam (Thondai Nadu Shrine #20 / Shrine #283 of 276 Shaivite Shrines); **Guru Sthalam of Chennai

Padi Arulmigu Thiruvalithayanathar Temple, historically known as Tiruvalithayam, is one of the celebrated 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams immortalized in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns composed by Saint Thirugnanasambandar. Situated in Padi near Anna Nagar West in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, this ancient temple is famous throughout South India as the paramount Guru Parihara Sthalam of Chennai, where Sage Brihaspati (Guru Bhagavan, planet Jupiter) worshipped Lord Shiva and received redemption from a divine curse.

Featuring a rare elephant-back shaped apsidal (Gajaprishta) granite vimanam, fine Chola relief sculptures, an ancient Pathiri tree (Sthala Vriksham), and a dedicated Guru Bhagavan shrine, Padi offers a deeply serene spiritual oasis amidst urban Chennai. Thousands of devotees visit this sacred temple every Thursday to pray for educational success, career growth, and relief from Jupiter planetary afflictions.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

Guru Bhagavan's Penance & Redemption

According to the ancient Sthala Puranam, Sage Brihaspati (Guru Bhagavan, planet Jupiter) accidentally committed an error during a Vedic sacrifice, incurring the wrath and curse of Lord Brahma. To regain his divine power and spiritual luminosity, Guru traveled to this sacred forest of Pathiri trees (Thiruvalithayam). He excavated a holy water pool (Bharadwaja Theertham) and engaged in rigorous penance before Lord Shiva. Moved by his sincere devotion, Lord Shiva manifested from the Swayambhu Lingam, absolved Guru Bhagavan of all curses, and crowned him as the eternal preceptor (Deva Guru) of the celestial devas. Because Guru Bhagavan gained grace here, Padi is revered as Chennai's principal Guru Parihara Sthalam.

Sage Bharadwaja & The Lark Bird Legend (Valiyan)

Another legend relates how Sage Bharadwaja was transformed into a lark bird (Valiyan in Tamil) due to a curse. Flying to Thiruvalithayam, the lark bird worshipped Lord Shiva daily by dropping Pathiri flowers onto the Lingam. Lord Shiva restored the sage to his human form and granted him liberation (Moksha). The name Thiruvalithayam derives from Valiyan (lark bird) worshipping Lord Shiva at this holy site.

Marriage of Lord Ganesha with Siddhi & Riddhi

Local Puranic tradition records that Lord Ganesha married Goddesses Siddhi and Riddhi at Padi under the guidance of Lord Brahma. A special sub-shrine depicting Lord Ganesha with His divine consorts is enshrined inside the temple prakaram.

Classical Literary Canon & Sacred Hymns

This sacred shrine is enshrined in the 1st Thirumurai of the Tevaram by Saint Thirugnanasambandar.

  • Tevaram Hymn by Saint Thirugnanasambandar:

> "பண்டாரன் பாடி அமைந்த படர்சடையான் > வண்டாரு கொன்றை மதிய சூடினான்றன் > தண்டாரும் தண்புனல் சூழ் திருவலிதாயத்து > எண்தோளன் எம்பெருமான் அடிகளே ஏத்துமினே." > > Translation: "Lord Shiva with flowing matted locks and crescent moon resides at water-surrounded Thiruvalithayam! Praise the lotus feet of the eight-armed Supreme Lord who grants all boons."

The temple is also extolled in Sekkizhar's 12th-century Periya Puranam.

Epigraphical & Historical Events

  • Chola Apsidal Vimanam Inscriptions: Epigraphical surveys by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) record over 25 stone inscriptions carved on the Gajaprishta Garbhagriha walls.
