Panayapuram Arulmigu Panangatteeswarar Temple (historically known as Puravar Panangattur) is an ancient 10th-century Chola granite sanctuary and the 20th holy Paadal Petra Sthalam in the historic Nadu Naadu region of Tamil Nadu. Situated along the Vikravandi–Puducherry highway in Villupuram district, this sacred temple derives its divine name Panangattur from the ancient forest of Panai (Palmyra Palm trees / Borassus flabellifer) that surrounded the shrine, and is famous across Tamil Nadu as a paramount Netrapureeswarar (Eye Healing Shrine).
Enshrined in the 7th-century Tamil Tevaram hymns composed by child-saint Thirugnanasambandar and Saint Thirunavukkarasar (Appar), the temple is celebrated for the divine miracle where Surya Bhagavan (Sun God) regained his lost eyesight after performing intense penance beneath the Palmyra trees. The temple complex features a classic Dravidian Rajagopuram, an inner sanctum housing the Swayambhu Lingam of Panangatteeswarar, a dedicated shrine for Goddess Satyayadakshi, a revered pair of male and female Palmyra palm trees (Sthala Vriksham), and the holy Surya Theertham. Pilgrims visit Panayapuram to seek divine cures for eye ailments, vision loss, cataract issues, and solar astrological doshams.
