Sashta Arupadai Veedu #6, HR&CE Administered Temple
Arulmigu Solaimalai Murugan Temple, Pazhamudircholai (அருள்மிகு சோலைமலை முருகன் திருக்கோயில், பழமுதிர்ச்சோலை) is the 6th abode (Sashta Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, nestled amid the dense forests of Alagar Hills (Solaimalai), 25 km from Madurai.
Immortalized in Sangam literature (Tirumurugarrupadai by Nakkeerar) and Thiruppugazh by Saint Arunagirinathar, Pazhamudircholai is famous for the divine episode of 'Sutta Pazham' (cooked/roasted fruit) where Lord Murugan took the guise of a young shepherd boy playing under a Jamun (Nagappazham) tree to test the wisdom of legendary Tamil poetess Avvaiyar.
Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends
1. The Sutta Pazham Miracle of Poetess Avvaiyar: Saint Avvaiyar was resting under a Jamun tree on Solaimalai hill when a young shepherd boy sitting on a branch asked if she wanted 'Sutta Pazham' (burnt fruit) or 'Sudadha Pazham' (unburnt fruit). Perplexed, Avvaiyar replied she wanted unburnt fruit. The boy shook the branch; fruits fell onto the dusty ground. When Avvaiyar blew dust off the hot fruits, the boy asked with a smile, 'Is the fruit too hot that you are blowing on it?' Realizing the boy was Lord Murugan in disguise, Avvaiyar humbled her pride and bowed to his divine wisdom.
2. Manifestation of Noopura Ganga: According to Sthala Puranam, when Lord Vishnu as Trivikrama measured the universe, Lord Brahma washed Vishnu's anklet-adorned feet with holy water. Drops fell onto Alagar hill, originating the crystalline stream 'Noopura Ganga' (Silambar), which feeds the sacred tanks of both Kallazhagar and Pazhamudircholai.
Epigraphical & Historical Events
Archaeo-historical documentation by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Pandyan epigraphical records confirm that the sacred Solaimalai hill served as a major spiritual retreat and fortress sanctuary during the Early and Medieval Pandyan dynasties.
The hill shrine historically housed the sacred icon of Lord Kallazhagar (Vishnu) alongside Lord Solaimalai Murugan. Epigraphical records catalog land grants and royal endowments by Pandyan kings (Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan) and Nayaka rulers of Madurai (King Thirumalai Nayak) for maintaining temple tanks, feeding halls, and forest pilgrim pathways. The temple is today administered by the HR&CE Department of Tamil Nadu.
