About the Sacred Destination

Presiding Deity
Srikalahasteeswara (Vayu Air Lingam), Gnana Prasunamba Amman

Srikalahasteeswara Temple in Srikalahasti is the sacred Vayu Sthalam (Air Element shrine / காற்றுக் தலம்) among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams. Situated on the banks of Swarnamukhi River 36 km from Tirupati, Lord Shiva is worshipped as the Air Lingam (Vayu Lingam). Even though the inner garbharagriha is completely draftless with no open windows or doors, two brass lamp flames beside the Lingam continuously flicker and sway, proving the eternal presence of wind/air. The shrine is renowned worldwide for Rahu-Ketu Sarpa Dosha Nivaranam pujas.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

• The Spider, Cobra & Elephant (Sri-Kala-Hasti): Three creatures worshipped Shiva at this shrine: 1. Sri (Spider): Wove silk cobwebs over the Lingam to shield it from dust. 2. Kala (Cobra): Placed gemstones (Nagamani) from the underworld on the Lingam. 3. Hasti (Elephant): Washed the Lingam with river water and placed fresh Bilva leaves. The elephant pushed away the gems; the enraged cobra bit the elephant. Both died alongside the spider in prostration. Shiva granted mukti to all three and named the shrine Sri-Kala-Hasti. • Kannappa Nayanar's Eye Sacrifice: Thinna, a tribal hunter, offered wild meat and river water carried in his mouth to Shiva. Testing his devotion before priests, Shiva caused blood to spout from the Lingam's right eye. Thinna gouged out his right eye with an arrow and placed it on the Lingam. When blood spouted from the left eye, Thinna raised his arrow to gouge his remaining eye. Shiva caught his hand, restored his sight, and welcomed him into mukti.

Epigraphical & Historical Events

The sacred shrine of Srikalahasteeswara Temple, Srikalahasti (Vayu Sthalam) (srikalahasteeswara-temple-srikalahasti) stands as a prominent historical landmark deeply woven into the cultural and epigraphical heritage of South Indian temple architecture. Architecturally evolved across successive royal eras—including the Pallava, Chola, Pandya, Chera, Vijayanagara, and Nayakar dynasties—the complex features granite stone masonry, intricately carved pillar halls (Mandapams), sculpted gateway towers (Gopurams), and sacred step-stone water tanks (Pushkarani / Theertham).

Epigraphical records discovered on the temple's outer stone walls catalog generous royal endowments, land grants, gold ornaments, and ritual provisions contributed by historic monarchs, local chieftains, and merchant guilds. Serving as both a spiritual sanctuary and a socio-economic center for surrounding communities across centuries, the temple continues to maintain authentic daily Agamic rituals, annual brahmotsavams, and sacred festival traditions passed down through generations.
