Sacred Status & Classification
Prathama Arupadai Veedu #1, ASI & HR&CE Protected Monument
Arulmigu Subramanyaswamy Temple, Tiruparankundram (அருள்மிகு சுப்பிரமணியசுவாமி திருக்கோயில், திருப்பரங்குன்றம்) is the 1st abode (Prathama Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, located 8 km Southwest of Madurai.
A spectacular 6th-century rock-cut cave temple chiseled into the massive granite face of Tiruparankundram hill, this is the sacred site where Lord Murugan wedded Deivayanai (daughter of Lord Indra) after His victory over Surapadman. Celebrated in Sangam literature (Tirumurugarrupadai by Nakkeerar) and Tevaram/Thiruppugazh hymns, it is one of the oldest rock-cut temples in South India.
Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends
1. Celestial Wedding of Murugan and Deivayanai: After vanquishing the demon Surapadman at Thiruchendur, Lord Indra offered his celestial daughter Deivayanai in marriage to Lord Murugan in gratitude for saving the Devas. The celestial wedding took place at Tiruparankundram in the presence of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and all celestial devas.
2. Saint Nakkeerar's Deliverance: A demon named Karkatamuki imprisoned 999 holy men in a cave on Tiruparankundram hill, intending to sacrifice 1,000 men. Saint Nakkeerar was captured as the 1,000th prisoner. Nakkeerar composed the soul-stirring hymn 'Tirumurugarrupadai'. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Murugan appeared with his Vel, slew the demon, and liberated all 1,000 sages.
Epigraphical & Historical Events
Archaeo-historical excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Pandyan epigraphy date the rock-cut cave sanctum of Tiruparankundram to the 6th–8th century CE under early Pandyan monarchs (King Maravarman Rajasimha I and King Srimara Srivallabha).
Inscriptions engraved into the cave walls record endowments for daily pujas, oil lamps, and stone pillar halls (Kalyana Mandapam) added by Late Pandyas and Vijayanagara/Nayaka rulers of Madurai. Unique among Murugan temples, Abhishekam is not performed directly on the presiding granite deity carved from the bedrock; instead, holy Abhishekam is performed upon the sacred Vel (spear). The temple is administered by the HR&CE Department of Tamil Nadu.
