- Spiritual & Architectural Overview: Arulmigu Thillai Nataraja Temple is one of the most venerated and architecturally celebrated temple complexes in South Asia, covering 51 acres in the heart of Chidambaram. Revered as the Space/Ether Element (Akasa Sthalam) among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the temple is home to the Kanaka Sabha (Golden Hall), whose roof is gilded with 21,600 golden tiles held together by 72,000 gold nails—representing the human respiratory rate (21,600 breaths per day) and 72,000 Nadis (vital energy channels). The complex features four monumental stone Rajagopurams, five inner courtyards (Prakarams), the 1,000-pillared Raja Sabha, and the Sivaganga lotus tank.
- Sacred Geography & Setting: Located in the historic Tillai forest region, 15 km west of the Bay of Bengal coastline and Pitchavaram mangroves.
- Core Spiritual Identity: The sacred epicenter where Lord Shiva performs his immortal Cosmic Dance of Bliss (Ananda Tandava), symbolizing the five divine functions (Pancha Kritya): Creation (Srishti), Preservation (Sthiti), Destruction (Samhara), Illusion (Tirobhava), and Salvation (Anugraha). It is also the home of Chidambara Rahasyam, the formless manifestation of God as infinite space.

About the Sacred Destination
Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends
In the ancient Tillai mangrove forest, arrogant sages (Rishis) of Darukavanam believed that rituals alone controlled the cosmos, denying the existence of God. To shatter their illusion, Lord Shiva assumed the enchanting form of Bhikshatana (the cosmic mendicant) while Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Mohini. The sages' wives were enchanted by Bhikshatana, while the sages were captivated by Mohini.
Enraged, the sages conducted a black-magic sacrifice (Abhichara Yagna) to destroy Shiva. They unleashed a ferocious tiger, a giant venomous serpent, a roaring elephant, and the demon of ignorance (Apasmara Purusha / Muyalakan). Lord Shiva effortlessly slew the tiger and wore its skin, wrapped the serpent around his neck as an ornament, crushed the demon Apasmara beneath his right foot, and stepped onto the Golden Hall platform to perform the Ananda Tandava—his cosmic dance of supreme bliss. Sages Patanjali and Vyaghrapada fell at his feet in eternal devotion.
To the right of the bronze Nataraja icon in the Chit Sabha, a black velvet curtain embroidered with golden Bilva leaves veils the sacred Chidambara Rahasyam. When the curtain is drawn during daily poojas, no physical icon is revealed; instead, a garland of golden Bilva leaves hangs over empty space—symbolizing God as formless, omnipresent Ether (Akasa).
Classical Literary Canon & Sacred Hymns
- Tevaram Canon: Hailed as Kovil ("The Temple") in all 7 volumes of the Saiva Canon (Tirumurai). Saint Thirugnanasambandar, Saint Appar, Saint Sundarar, and Saint Manikkavasagar sang ecstatic hymns here.
- Thiruvasagam: Saint Manikkavasagar attained Moksha at the Nataraja sanctum, declaring his poems were dictated by Lord Nataraja himself.
- Periya Puranam: Saint Sekkizhar composed the entire Periya Puranam in the 1,000-pillared hall of Chidambaram under the divine inspiration of the opening words "Ulagelaam".
Epigraphical & Historical Events
- Chola Golden Roof Gilding (907–955 CE): King Parantaka Chola I crowned the Chit Sabha with 21,600 golden tiles, earning the title Pon Veendha Cholan.
- Pandyan & Vijayanagara Grants (13th–16th Century CE): Sundara Pandya I gifted a gold armor (Kavacham), while Krishnadevaraya constructed the 140-foot North Gopuram in 1516 CE.
