Paadal Petra Sthalam (Thondai Nadu Shrine #29 / Shrine #266 of 276 Shaivite Shrines); **Eagle Temple (Kazhugu Kovil)**; 4 Vedas Manifestation Hill

Thirukalukundram Arulmigu Vedagiriswarar Temple is one of the most famous and ancient Paadal Petra Sthalams in South India. Immortalized in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns composed by the Holy Trio (Sambandar, Appar, Sundarar), the Tiruppugazh by Arunagirinathar, and Periya Puranam, this sacred hill temple near Mahabalipuram is celebrated throughout the world as the Eagle Temple (Kazhugu Kovil).

Encompassing two monumental complexes—the hilltop sanctum of Sri Vedagiriswarar standing atop a 500-step granite hill representing the four Vedas, and the colossal 5-acre foothill temple of Sri Bhakta Vatsaleswarar housing four soaring Rajagopurams and the miraculous Sangu Theertham tank—Thirukalukundram is an architectural and spiritual marvel. Millions of pilgrims visit this sacred sanctuary to pray for health, liberation from curses, and spiritual elevation.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

The Four Vedas as Four Granite Hills (Vedagiri)

According to the ancient Sthala Puranam, the four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva) prayed to Lord Shiva, seeking to remain eternally immune to cosmic dissolution (Pralaya). Lord Shiva turned the four Vedas into four sacred granite mountain peaks (Vedagiri). The hilltop temple is built upon the Atharva Veda peak, where Lord Shiva manifested as a self-born Swayambhu Lingam named Vedagiriswarar ("The Lord of the Veda Mountain").

The Sacred Eagles Miracle (Pakshi Theertham / Kazhugu Kovil)

For over a millennium, two celestial sacred eagles (Sangu & Padmam, identified as Ashtavasus under a curse) descended to the hilltop temple every day precisely at 12:00 PM noon. The temple priest offered sweet rice pudding (Sarkarai Pongal) to the eagles on a stone altar overlooking the valley. The eagles ate from the priest's hands, drank holy water, circumambulated the hilltop sanctum three times, and flew away toward Rameswaram. This daily miraculous eagle feeding gave the town its name Thirukazhukundram ("The Sacred Hill of Eagles").

Sangu Theertham Conch Emergence Miracle

Once every 12 years (during the Sangu Theertham Pushkaram festival), a natural white conch (Sangu) miraculously emerges from the depths of the Sangu Theertham water tank. The emerged conchs are collected with sacred rites and preserved in the foothill Bhakta Vatsaleswarar Temple museum for public worship.

Classical Literary Canon & Sacred Hymns
