Paadal Petra Sthalam (#17 in Nadu Naadu / 276 Shaivite Shrines); Glorified in Tevaram by Thirugnanasambandar.

Thirumanikuzhi Arulmigu Udavi Nayakar Temple (historically known as Thiru Manikuzhi) is an ancient 10th-century Chola granite sanctuary and the 17th holy Paadal Petra Sthalam in the historic Nadu Naadu region of Tamil Nadu. Situated along the serene Kedilam riverbank near Cuddalore, this revered temple derives its celebrated name Udavi Nayakar (The Helper Lord) from the divine miracle where Lord Shiva assumed the form of a hunter to protect a traveling merchant from highway bandits and restore his stolen wealth.

Enshrined in the 7th-century Tamil Tevaram hymns composed by child-saint Thirugnanasambandar, the temple is also famous as the holy venue where Lord Vishnu in His Vamana avatar performed penance to seek Lord Shiva's blessings before stepping across the three worlds. The temple complex features a classic Dravidian Rajagopuram, an inner sanctum housing the Swayambhu Lingam of Udavi Nayakar, a dedicated shrine for Goddess Ambujakshi, the sacred Kondrai tree (Sthala Vriksham), and the holy Kedilam River Ghat. Pilgrims visit Thirumanikuzhi to seek divine protection during travel, financial help in crises, and resolution of property disputes.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

The Miracle of 'Udavi Nayakar' (The Helper Lord)

According to the Sthala Puranam, a devout merchant named Vibhakthan was traveling along the Kedilam river valley carrying a massive treasure of rubies, pearls, and gold to trade. As night fell near Thirumanikuzhi, a band of fierce highway robbers surrounded the merchant and threatened to kill him. Desperate for help, Vibhakthan cried out to Lord Shiva: "O Lord of Manikuzhi! Save me!"

Responding to His devotee's cry, Lord Shiva instantly manifested as a powerful hunter wielding a golden bow and arrows. Lord Shiva routed the bandits, recovered every single stolen gem, and personally escorted the merchant safely to his destination. Deeply moved by the Lord's timely intervention, Vibhakthan consecrated the shrine, hailing Lord Shiva as Udavi Nayakar (The Lord Who Helps in Times of Need).

Vamana Avatar's Worship & Name 'Vamanapureeswarar'

Puranic lore records that before taking his incarnation as a dwarf Brahmin (Vamana) to subdue King Mahabali, Lord Vishnu traveled to Thirumanikuzhi, installed a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam, and performed intense Vedic rituals. Lord Shiva appeared before Vishnu, blessed Him with cosmic height (Trivikrama power), and promised success in His avataric mission. Hence, the temple is also revered as Vamanapureeswarar.

Thirugnanasambandar's Hymns

When Saint Thirugnanasambandar visited Thirumanikuzhi, he sang 11 melodious Tevaram pathigams in the 1st Thirumurai starting with "Kadhalaagi kasindhu... ", praising Udavi Nayakar as the ever-responsive savior who comes to the aid of anyone who calls upon Him with sincere devotion.
