Vriddhachalam Arulmigu Vriddhagiriswarar Temple (historically known as Thiru Mudhukundram) is one of the largest, most sacred, and ancient Paadal Petra Sthalams in South India. Situated on the banks of the holy Manimuktha River in Cuddalore district, Vriddhachalam (meaning "Ancient Mountain") is revered in Shaivite scriptures as a supreme Mukti Sthalam equal in spiritual potency to Varanasi (Kashi), where Lord Shiva Himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of departing souls.
Enshrined in the 7th–9th century CE Tamil Tevaram hymns by child-saint Thirugnanasambandar, Saint Thirunavukkarasar (Appar), and Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar, the temple is world-famous for the legend of Sundarar depositing 12,000 gold coins into the Manimuktha River and retrieving them at Tiruvarur. The massive 10-acre temple complex is structurally unique for its "Five Fives" symmetry: 5 Gopurams, 5 Praharams, 5 Vimanams, 5 Nandi Statues, and 5 Sacred Water Bodies (Pancha Theerthams).
