Thirunelvayil Arathurai Arulmigu Theerthapureeswarar Temple (also known as Tiru Arathurai) is the premier Paadal Petra Sthalam in the historical region of Nadu Naadu. Nestled on the banks of the sacred Niva (Vellar) River near Pennadam in Cuddalore district, this venerable sanctuary is world-famous in Shaivite history as the holy spot where Lord Shiva bestowed a divine Pearl Palanquin (Muthu Sivigai), Pearl Umbrella (Muthu Kuda), and Pearl Bugle (Muthu Chinnam) upon the child-saint Thirugnanasambandar to ease his barefoot pilgrimage.

Immortalized in the 7th-century Tamil Tevaram hymns by Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar (Appar), and Sundaramurthy Nayanar, the temple showcases classic Chola architecture including a five-tiered Rajagopuram, an inner sanctum housing the Swayambhu Lingam of Theerthapureeswarar, a dedicated shrine for Goddess Anandhanayaki, the sacred Banyan tree (Aalamaram), and the serene Neelamalar Poigai water body. Pilgrims visit Thirunelvayil Arathurai to seek relief from physical exhaustion, foot ailments, educational hurdles, and spiritual enlightenment.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

The Divine Miracle of the Pearl Palanquin (Muthu Sivigai)

According to the Sthala Puranam and Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam, when the child-saint Thirugnanasambandar reached three years of age and embarked on his foot pilgrimage across Tamilakam to sing Tevaram hymns, his tender feet became blistered and swollen from walking long distances across hot unpaved terrain. As Sambandar neared Thirunelvayil Arathurai, his father Shivapada Hridayar carried him on his shoulders, but the child insisted on walking on his own feet out of humility.

Deeply moved by the child-saint's suffering, Lord Shiva appeared in the dreams of all temple priests (Archakas) and village elders of Thirunelvayil Arathurai simultaneously during the night. The Lord commanded them: "My child Sambandar is coming to worship Me with blistered feet. Go to the temple sanctum, take the Pearl Palanquin, Pearl Umbrella, and Pearl Bugle that I have placed there, and present them to him."

The next morning, the priests unlocked the inner sanctum and were awestruck to find a glowing, jewel-encrusted Muthu Sivigai (Pearl Palanquin) along with a pearl umbrella and trumpets. With tears of joy and Vedic chants, the entire town marched out to greet child Sambandar. Seeing the divine gifts sent by Lord Shiva, Sambandar sang the famous hymn "Endhanadhadhusaiya..." acknowledging that the palanquin was Lord Shiva's divine grace (Arul), and mounted the palanquin to enter the temple.

Sage Agastya & Theertham Origin

Legend also holds that Sage Agastya created a sacred spring (Theertham) here by invoking the waters of holy rivers to perform daily abhishekam to Lord Shiva. Hence, the deity came to be known as Theerthapureeswarar (the Lord of Holy Waters).
