Paadal Petra Sthalam (Thondai Nadu Shrine #16 / Shrine #279 of 276 Shaivite Shrines)

Thirupachur Arulmigu Vaacheeswarar Temple, historically known as Paasoor, is one of the celebrated 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams immortalized in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns composed by Saint Thirugnanasambandar and Saint Appar. Situated on the western outskirts of Tiruvallur town in Tamil Nadu, this ancient temple is famous for the origin legend of a self-manifested Swayambhu Lingam uncovered beneath a dense bamboo grove (Moongil Vanam).

Spanning an extensive granite complex with a towering 5-tiered Rajagopuram, sculpted Chola pillar corridors, the unique 11 Ganesha shrines (Ekadasa Vinayagar), and a sacred lotus tank (Pasupati Theertham), Thirupachur is a revered spiritual haven. Devotees visit this sacred sanctuary to pray for relief from mental stress, success in legal matters, and divine family harmony.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

Discovery of Swayambhu Lingam & Axe Scar Legend (Vaacheeswarar)

In ancient times, Thirupachur was covered by a dense jungle of bamboo thickets (Moongil Vanam or Pachu in ancient Tamil). A cowherd noticed that his best cow wandered away daily into the bamboo grove and spontaneously poured her milk over a specific patch of earth. When the hunter/cowherd attempted to clear the thicket by striking his axe (Vaasi in Tamil), blood spurted out from the earth! Horrified, he dug carefully and discovered a radiant self-manifested Swayambhu Lingam bearing a deep scar on its crown from the axe strike. The presiding deity was consecrated as Vaacheeswarar ("The Lord Struck by the Axe") and Paasoor Nathar ("The Lord of the Bamboo Thicket"). The scar on the head of the Lingam remains clearly visible to this day during ritual Abhishekam.

The 11 Ganesha Shrines (Ekadasa Vinayagar)

Thirupachur is renowned among Shaivite temples for housing a cluster of eleven distinct Ganesha idols (Ekadasa Vinayagar) sculpted in a single row along the outer prakaram corridor. According to temple tradition, Lord Vishnu, Brahma, the Saptarishis, and the Devas each consecrated a Ganesha icon here to seek divine blessings before undertaking cosmic duties. Worshiping the Ekadasa Vinayagar is believed to dispel all obstacles and bestow immense wisdom.

Saint Ramalinga Swamigal (Vallalar) Visit

The famous 19th-century Shaivite saint Vallalar (Ramalinga Swamigal) visited Thirupachur and composed his heart-touching Pachoor Padhigam hymns in praise of Lord Vaacheeswarar, celebrating the Lord's supreme grace and maternal love toward all living beings.
