Paadal Petra Sthalam (Thondai Nadu #8 / #271 of 276)

Thiruppanangadu Arulmigu Thalapureeswarar Temple is a celebrated Paadal Petra Sthalam (Thondai Nadu Shrine #8) immortalized in the 8th-century Tevaram hymns of Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar. Nestled amidst ancient Palmyra palm groves near Cheyyar, the temple features a rare dual-sanctum architectural layout housing two principal self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shiva Lingams facing East and South: Sri Thalapureeswarar and Sri Kripapatheeswarar.

Spanning across a serene granite enclosure, the temple features a 3-tiered Gopuram, the sacred Jada Theertham (Panangaadu Theertham), and two sacred Palmyra palm trees (Panai Maram) serving as the Sthala Vriksham. The shrine is famous across Tamil Nadu for the miracle where Lord Shiva disguised Himself as a palm tree climber, plucked fresh tender palm fruits (Nongu), and served them to a dehydrated Saint Sundarar.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

Sundarar's Thirst & Tender Palm Fruit Miracle

According to the Thondaimandala Puranam, Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar was traveling on foot through the dense Palmyra palm forest of Thiruppanangadu under the intense noon sun. Overcome by extreme heat, thirst, and exhaustion, Sundarar collapsed near two Palmyra palm trees (Panai Maram).

Lord Shiva, moved by His devotee's suffering, took the form of an elderly palm tree climber (Panai Aeri / Old Brahmin). The Lord climbed the high palm tree, plucked fresh tender palm fruits (Nongu), cut them open, and served cool palm water and fruit to Sundarar. After Sundarar ate the fruit and refreshed himself, the old man vanished into the palm trees. Sundarar realized it was Lord Shiva Himself who had climbed the tree to save his life, broke into tears, and composed a 10-verse Tamil Tevaram decad starting with "Nimirthana Senthadai" (நிமிர்ந்தன செஞ்சடை).

Male & Female Palmyra Palm Tree Botanical Anomaly

The temple courtyard features two ancient Palmyra palm trees (Panai Maram) growing side-by-side: one male palm tree and one female palm tree. Uniquely, both the male and female palm trees yield sweet palm fruits (Nongu) throughout the year without artificial cross-pollination or grafting, considered a living divine miracle commemorating Lord Shiva's presence.

Twin Sanctum Layout (Thalapureeswarar & Kripapatheeswarar)

The temple inner prakaram is unique as it houses two distinct stone sanctums:

  • Sri Thalapureeswarar (Panangatteeswarar) facing East, with Goddess Amirthavalli Ambal.
  • Sri Kripapatheeswarar facing South, with Goddess Kripanayaki Ambal.

Classical Literary Canon & Sacred Hymns

Thiruppanangadu is enshrined in the 7th Thirumurai of the Shaivite Tevaram canon composed by Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar.

> Tevaram Verse (Sundarar - 7th Thirumurai, Decad 86, Verse 1): > "நிமிர்ந்தன செஞ்சடை மேல்மதி சூடி > அமர்ந்தன செய்ய உமையவளோடு > நிமிர்ந்த பனங்காட்டு தாளபுரீசனைத் > தொழுமடியாரை அடையா துயரே."

Translation: "Oh Lord who wears the crescent moon upon Your matted red locks, who resides gracefully with Goddess Parvati! Those who bow before Lord Thalapureeswarar of Thiruppanangadu shall never be touched by sorrow."

The miracle is also documented in Sekkizhar's 12th-century Periya Puranam.

Epigraphical & Historical Events

  • Chola Inscriptions (11th–12th Century CE): Inscriptions carved on the inner granite sanctum plinth date to Chola Kings Vikrama Chola (1118–1135 CE) and Kulothunga Chola III (1178–1218 CE), recording land grants in Panangadu village for maintaining the annual Nongu Fruit Festival and lighting 12 perpetual ghee lamps (Nanda Deepam).

Archaeo-Engineering & Scientific Marvels
