Paadal Petra Sthalam (#15 in Nadu Naadu / 276 Shaivite Shrines); Glorified in Tevaram by Sundaramurthy Nayanar. Site of **Sundarar's Guru Diksha & Birthplace of Arulnandi Shivachariyar**.

Thiruthuraiyur Arulmigu Sishta Guru Nadhar Temple (historically known as Thiru Thuraiyur) is an ancient 10th-century Chola granite sanctuary and the 15th holy Paadal Petra Sthalam in the historic Nadu Naadu region of Tamil Nadu. Located along the Pennai riverbank near Panruti in Cuddalore district, this revered temple holds deep philosophical significance as a paramount Guru Peetham, where Lord Shiva manifested as the supreme preceptor (Sishta Guru Nadhar) to impart sacred initiation (Thavaneri Diksha) to Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar.

Enshrined in the 7th-century Tamil Tevaram hymns composed by Saint Sundarar, Thiruthuraiyur is also celebrated as the birthplace and Samadhi sthalam of Arulnandi Shivachariyar, author of Sivagnana Siddhiyar (one of the foundational treatises of Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy). The temple complex features a classic Dravidian Rajagopuram, an inner sanctum housing the Swayambhu Lingam of Sishta Guru Nadhar, a dedicated shrine for Goddess Poongothai Nayaki, the sacred Marudha tree (Sthala Vriksham), and the holy Surya Theertham. Pilgrims visit Thiruthuraiyur to pray for Guru grace, educational excellence, career clarity, and spiritual progress.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

Lord Shiva as 'Sishta Guru Nadhar' (The Perfect Preceptor)

According to the Sthala Puranam, following his divine claim as Lord Shiva's bond-slave at Thiruvennainallur, Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar traveled to Thiruthuraiyur to seek spiritual penance rites (Thavaneri). Sundarar prayed: "O Lord! Teach me the divine rules of ascetic worship and grant me the grace of a Guru."

Lord Shiva manifested before Sundarar in the form of an austere preceptor (Sishta Guru Nadhar), initiated him into the formal rites of Shaivite meditation, and instructed him to perform penance at Thiruthuraiyur. Gratified by his Guru's initiation, Sundarar sang 10 melodious Tevaram verses in the 7th Thirumurai starting with "Thavamurai thavanerigalam... ", extolling the Lord as the supreme teacher who leads devotees out of ignorance.

Birthplace of Arulnandi Shivachariyar (Author of Sivagnana Siddhiyar)

Thiruthuraiyur is celebrated as the sacred birthplace of Arulnandi Shivachariyar, the foremost disciple of Meykandar and one of the four Santana Acharyas of Shaiva Siddhanta. Arulnandi composed the monumental Tamil philosophical text Sivagnana Siddhiyar at Thiruthuraiyur, elaborating the 12 aphorisms of Sivagnana Bodham. A dedicated shrine honoring Arulnandi Shivachariyar is enshrined within the temple premises.

Surya Bhagavan's Worship

Legend holds that Surya Bhagavan (Sun God) performed daily worship at Thiruthuraiyur to seek forgiveness for celestial arrogance. Surya created the Surya Theertham tank and bathed the Shiva Lingam in morning sunlight. On specific days during the Tamil month of Panguni (March–April), the morning sun rays shine directly onto the inner Lingam.
