Thiruvennainallur Arulmigu Kripapureeswarar Temple (historically known as Thiru Vennainallur) is one of the most revered and foundational Paadal Petra Sthalams in South India. Situated near Villupuram in Kallakurichi district, this ancient sanctuary is celebrated across Shaivite literature as the exact historic venue where Lord Shiva disguised Himself as an elderly Brahmin, interrupted the wedding of young Sundaramurthy Nayanar, claimed him as His eternal bond-slave through a legal palm-leaf deed, and commanded him to sing his first Tevaram hymn starting with the word "Pitha" (Madman).

Immortalized in the opening chapter of Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam, Thiruvennainallur is hailed as Kripapureeswarar (The Lord of Grace) and Aadkondanathar (The Lord Who Claimed the Devotee). The sprawling Chola granite temple complex features a grand 5-tiered Rajagopuram, an inner sanctum housing the Swayambhu Lingam of Kripapureeswarar, the historical Pithan Mandapam / Sabha Mandapam (where the divine court trial took place), a dedicated shrine for Goddess Mangalambigai, and the sacred Mangala Theertham. Pilgrims visit Thiruvennainallur to seek divine grace, resolution of court litigations, removal of ego, and spiritual surrender.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

The Divine Bond-Slave Trial (Taduthadutkonda Puranam)

According to the Sthala Puranam and Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam, when young Nambiyarooran (Sundarar) was about to be wedded to Padhumadhirai at Manamugam, an venerable elderly Brahmin carrying an ancient, weathered palm-leaf manuscript (Oolai Chuvadi) suddenly strode into the wedding hall and interrupted the rituals!

The old man declared: "According to an ancestral bond deed executed by Nambiyarooran's grandfather Aruran, this groom and his entire male lineage are my eternal bond-slaves! He cannot marry without my permission." Outraged by the old man's claim, Sundarar called him a Pithan (madman) and snatched the manuscript, tearing a portion of it. The old man insisted: "Come to the council of Vedic elders (Sabha) at Thiruvennainallur to verify the original deed!"

At the Thiruvennainallur Sabha, the old man produced the original witnessed palm-leaf document. The assembly of Vedic elders carefully inspected the ancient handwriting and witness signatures, declaring the legal deed 100% authentic and ruling that Sundarar was indeed the old man's lawful slave!

The First Tevaram Hymn: "Pitha Pirai Soodi"

Accepting the court verdict with humility, Sundarar asked the old man: "Since I am your slave, show me your house and town." The old man led Sundarar and the entire assembly directly into the inner sanctum of the Thiruvennainallur temple and vanished into the Swayambhu Shiva Lingam!

Instantly, Lord Shiva manifested in the sky above the sanctum alongside Goddess Parvati upon His sacred Bull mount. The Lord proclaimed: "My child! In your anger at the wedding hall, you called Me a 'Pithan' (madman). I love that title! Sing My divine praises starting with that very word." Overwhelmed by tears of devotion, Sundarar sang his very first immortal Tevaram hymn in the 7th Thirumurai: > "பித்தா பிறைசூடீ பெருமானே அருளாளா > எத்தான் மறவாதே நினைக்கின்றேன் மனத்துன்னை..." > ("O Madman! O Moon-crowned Lord of Grace! How can I ever forget You in my heart...")
