Paadal Petra Sthalam (Thondai Nadu Shrine #22 / Shrine #285 of 276 Shaivite Shrines)

Thiruverkkadu Arulmigu Vedapureeswarar Temple is one of the celebrated 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams immortalized in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns composed by Saint Thirugnanasambandar. Situated in Thiruverkkadu near Poonamallee in West Chennai, this ancient temple is famous throughout South India as the sacred site where Lord Shiva granted the divine wedding vision (Kalyana Kolam) to Sage Agastya and where Lord Murugan received His divine spear (Vel).

Featuring a rare elephant-back shaped apsidal (Gajaprishta) granite vimanam, fine Chola relief sculptures, a sculpted Kalyana Sundarar panel behind the sanctum Lingam, and the sacred Vel Theertham tank, Thiruverkkadu is a major spiritual center. Devotees visit this sacred temple to pray for marriage boons, relief from obstacles, and divine wisdom.

Sthala Puranam & Authentic Legends

Sage Agastya's Celestial Marriage Vision (Kalyana Sundarar Panel)

During the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at Mount Kailash, all devas, rishis, and beings gathered in the North, causing the Earth to tilt dangerously toward the North. Lord Shiva commanded Sage Agastya to travel south to the Podhigai Hills to rebalance the cosmos. Grieved that he would miss the divine wedding, Agastya prayed at Thiruverkkadu. Lord Shiva promised to grant him the divine wedding vision (Kalyana Kolam) whenever he wished at Thiruverkkadu. Directly behind the main Swayambhu Lingam in the Garbhagriha, a sculpted stone panel depicts Shiva and Parvati in their divine marriage posture (Kalyana Sundarar).

Lord Murugan's Spear (Vel-Kadu / Thiruverkkadu)

Before waging war against the demon Surapadman, Lord Murugan established his military encampment at this white acacia forest (Velvelam Vanam). Goddess Parvati presented Lord Murugan with His invincible divine spear (Vel) at this spot. Because Lord Murugan established his spear forest (Vel-Kadu) here, the city was named Thiruverkkadu, and the sacred tank was consecrated as Vel Theertham.

Connection to Thiruverkkadu Karumari Amman

The ancient Vedapureeswarar Shaivite temple is the original historical presiding shrine of Thiruverkkadu, located just 1 km from the famous modern Thiruverkkadu Devi Karumari Amman Temple. Devotees traditionally offer worship at Vedapureeswarar Temple before visiting Karumari Amman.

Classical Literary Canon & Sacred Hymns

This sacred shrine is enshrined in the 2nd Thirumurai of the Tevaram by Saint Thirugnanasambandar.

  • Tevaram Hymn by Saint Thirugnanasambandar:

> "ஓங்குமா மாடம் சூழ் திருவேற்காட்டு > ஆங்கவன் தாள்பரவி அடியார்கள் ஏத்த > தேங்கமழ் கொன்றையினான் திங்களொடு பாம்பணிந்த > பாங்கவன் பாதமே பற்றிநின்றார்க்கே." > > Translation: "Lord Shiva adorned with sweet-scented Konrai flowers and crescent moon resides at Thiruverkkadu surrounded by soaring mansions! Those who clasp His lotus feet in devotion shall be granted eternal grace."

The temple is also extolled in Sekkizhar's 12th-century Periya Puranam.
