Exemption from Cosmic Deluge & Name Origin (Thiruvottiyur)
According to the Sthala Puranam, during the great cosmic deluge (Pralaya), when the entire universe was submerged underwater, Lord Shiva manifested as a fiery anthill flame (Adhi Puram) at this holy site and set boundaries (Otti-vaithal in Tamil) to prevent the floodwaters from submerging the land. Because Lord Shiva exempted this sacred ground from destruction, the city received the name Thiruvottiyur ("The Exempted Sacred Abode"), and the deity became known as Adhipureeswarar.
Marriage Vow of Saint Sundarar & Sangili Nayanar
Under the ancient Magizha tree (Magizhadimaram) inside the temple prakaram, Saint Sundarar gave a solemn vow to Sangili Nayanar, with Lord Shiva as witness, promising that he would never leave Thiruvottiyur. When Sundarar later broke his vow to travel to Thiruvarur, he lost sight in both his eyes. The sacred Magizhadimaram shrine remains a deeply revered site for wedding vows and marital fidelity.

Saint Pattinathar's Mukthi
The famous 10th-century saint-poet Pattinathar spent his final days at Thiruvottiyur. Playing with local cowherd boys on the beach, he asked them to cover him with a mud pot, transforming his physical body into a radiant Shiva Lingam. His Samadhi temple stands on the Thiruvottiyur beach front.
